Just finished my canopy. Still thinking about the lighting system so I temporarily installed 2 two bulb shop lights from Home depot ($6.38 each). Electrical will be installed on top so it will be hidden but convenient.

was it hard to build? cause i really want to make a canopy for my future 55 gal

The hardest part was cutting and fitting the crown moulding. Other than that it was simple. Build 2 rectangles the size of the tank out of 1x2 poplar. one became the base that sits on the tank the other is at the top. I then cut and attached 1/2 birch plywood on the two 1x2 rectangles to form the sides, back and top. The door is also 1/2 birch plywood. On the exposed edges I used this real wood edging (its this thin wood tape with glue on it and you iron it on) to hid the plywood edge. All pieces were glued together with wood glue then I used stainless steel screws from the inside to make sure it does not come apart. Since Home depot will do two cut for free I had them cut the cut the top, front and back to length (1 cut) then cut the top to width. Everything then fit into my car (camry).
Heres 2 more pictures showing the 1x2 rectangle and how canopy fits around tank.

so did you build the hood into the canopy?

wow that beautiful can you send me some more pics, PM me and ill send you my email

I'm going to built the lighting system into the canopy. Right now I have shop lights in it. Would have to take more pictures.

Canopy looks great. One word of advice (learned the hard way), from the pics, it looks like the hood is completely enclosed. If you are planning on running VHO or MH lights, you need to go ahead an incorporate fans to help keep the tank cool.

When I first built my hood, it was completely enclosed. My VHO lights raised the temp in my tank almost 6 degrees in less than 2 days. I tried adding a fan and ventilation, but eventually had to remove the back of the hood. That, combined with a fan, eliminated my tempo problem.

Very nice hood though. Post some plans, material list, and cost info. I bet there are other people who would be interested.
