I was at Home Depot today and noticed they have some Phillips "Daylight" 19 watt fluorescent lights for $8 that screw into incandescent fixtures. They are labeled 6500K. They claim to be equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent bulb.
I am thinking about using three of them in a hood over a 20 gallon tall freshwater tank (total depth about 15"). The total wattage would be 57 watts. I don't think I would put a true reflector inside - just paint it white. There would be a decent cost savings compared to a 55 watt kit from AHSupply.
I forgot to see what the current draw was on the bulbs so I don't know if there would be an increase in power consumption compared to the AHSupply product. I don't think they list that on their site either.
What would the drawbacks be to this approach?
