any one have thoughts on foam earplugs as filter media they absorb a ton of water.

If you are describing the bright orange or yellow foam earplugs like worn at the gun range, then I would say; no. It's possible that the dye coloring could leach into the aquarium adversely affecting the fish.
You can buy a big box of Fluval foam sponges for a very reasonable price. The sponges can easily be cut to size, and will last for years.

As above. Better stuff out there which is easier to handle / clean imo.
