Started building a sand filter out of pvc to hopefully filter some nitrates. Waiting for pvc glue to dry. Says 24 hrs but it still stinks.

Any way the idea is a pipe within a pipe with slits in the bottom of the inner pipe to allow water passage. Both pipes will be full of sand and water fed in with a irrigation dripper.
The water will just overflow from the outer pipe back into the tank.

Anyone had success with nitrate filters?

Well it was a failure anyways. The outer pipe won't overflow but the inner does. The inner pipe must have to be a whole lot taller for gravity to do its thing and force water over the edges. So I'd have to drop the water in my tank more which I don't want to do. Try a wider taller external floor standing one next??

Its like the surface tension is holding it there, it's rising up the sides of the inner pipe. Probably doesn't help that I'm using fairly small pvc pipe. The inner a little under an inch in diameter. I drew on my little pic what the surface of the water is doing.
