Has anyone tried a ehiem 2217impeler in a 2215??

Never tried it, but if the impeller fits in the motor housing it should increase the flow rate a bit. The aquaclear hob filters all (except the 110) use the same motor, only difference is the size and number of blades on the impellers. Tubing diameter will also affect flow rate though, so simply using the 2217 impeller won't give you the same flow rate as the whole filter.
 
I've read that you get 30-40 more gph kinda wondering about motor life.

Wouldn't affect motor life, it's just an electric coil that spins the impeller magnet. Ceramic shaft diameter should be the same for both impellers too.
