I'm wondering if anyone has ever done a sunrise/sunset type of effect where the lights turn on or off slowly over a period of time instead of going from 100% on to 0% off.

These are for VHO fluorescent lights (probably similar to these here).

Yes..Iv'e seen a DIY fixture over a SW 180gal that was made with about 8 or 10 bulbs of different types and wattages, each on it's own timer...In this situation, the tank was built into the wall, with all the equipment accessed from a closet behind... the fixture was never seen from the front of the tank....The effect was way cool

Did the lights turn on/off one at a time or did the lights actually get dimmer?

They turned on separately...I dont know what the wattage was on the 1st bulb but it was really dim, and had a pinkish hue...after the 3rd bulb turned on the 1st turned off...at high noon all but the 1st 2 and last 2 bulbs where on...12 hours of light to mimic 24

No link...I was at the house installing some cabinets....I'll see if I can get the wiring diagram from him
