I love the idea but why can't it be done with t8 bulbs? Less heat, more watts, easier control and color control for a real sunset/sunrise action! 10 lights, 5 ballasts and infinite color combinations.

This is a very nice idea. Are you planning on using 6 separate cheapy timers and just trying to keep them all synchronized correctly, or do you know of one complicated timer that can run all this?

I had thought of the same idea, but I am waiting to get a MUCH larger tank and try it. Keep us posted!

you can use an X10 home automation system to run the individual circuits. you will need X10 outlets and an X10 controller.

overall, it will be more expensive than 6 cheapo light timers.

I would be interested in a dimmer switch, to gradually turn the lights off, as the "sun" moves across the sky.....

t8's wouldnt work very well because the tank is only around 20 or so inches deep. and i dont think t8's come in that size.

and for the U-bulbs, would they be able to dim?

and for the restrike, what about a different shaped reflector?
