Please help

Hello all,
I am salivating to get a 75g setup. The problem is that I live in an old building. Two issues, I am pretty sure that the joists are 16" apart but I am not sure of their orientation. Meaning are they side to side or run the length of my building. Does anyone have any tricks? I also need to find them. They are hardwood floors and I am not sure a stud finder can see that deep. I obviously can't ask my landlord, pets are allowed and I already have a 29g but this will weigh in excess of 1000 lbs. I cannot go to an exterior wall either. Thanks to all.

If you can't ask your landlord, I'm not sure I'd put a tank that size in. If something happens, and he/she tells you it has to go, what are you going to do with all those poor fish?

I know my landlord and if he came and saw it he wouldn't make me take it down

find a nice little creek and see if you can tell which way the board wants to flex more. they also tend to run perpendicular to the hardwood floor.

Then why can't you ask him for building parameters just to be safe?

If they are hardwood floors and they are done right the hardwood will run across the joist not with the joist
