Question abouts bulbs

I made an acrylic canopy for my twenty gallon tall. I wanted to know if I had to stick with the twenty five watt bulbs or if I could put a higher wattage compact fluorescent bulb. I also have a five gallon with a self made canopy that I wanted to do the same thing with. Any help would be awesome.
