I think that the only (simple but still scientific) solution is to use 2 equivalent tanks and change something simple.

Temperature can be one,
Sand another one
Filtration another
LR
etc...

Yeah, I think if I just use two identical tanks, on with just sand and one w/cured LR and LS, this might show how you can instant cycle, and in the other one just use a raw shrimp and LS substrate.....Hmmm, was kinda trying to leverage the 125G in there! LOL!
 
i dont know what your cost in materials would be but you could always build a 125 yourself that is perfectly proportional. this would allow you to incorporate the 125 while still holding as many variables constant. plus your step-daughter would get props for building the tank i assume.
 
Well, you need ALL else to be constant, such as Watts per gallon in lighting
watts per gallon in heating
gallons per hour to tank capacity ratio
amount of gravel to tank floor area ratio
type of gravel
same exterior lighting, such as sun, lamps, all that other stuff...
same type of heater
same type of filter
