Usually a home gardening store carries slate ... among other rocks.

+1 Our Lowes has slate and at a MUCH lower cost than the lfs's. Look for it in the gardening section where they keep flagstones. The pieces are bigger but you can either cut them with a wet saw or use a hammer and chisel to break them apart to size. (You could try your luck and just drop them but that could get expensive)
