Spongefilter alternative

what if i did the same thing but to an Aqua Clear sponge??

would this work

I will be using this beat up sponge although i will clean it first it is from a AC 200.

I'm wondering if you can use a sponge on the inlet tube of a power filter in place of the plastic screen?
Maybe something a bit coarser than what is normally used. It would still protect the fish plus add some extra bio filtering without needing another pump.
