want to make a sump

i have a question about makeing a sump on my 4foot tank. can i just have some pipe drop in from the top to suck the water in? or do holes have to be cut into the bottom of my existing tank?

You can drill the BACK of the tank. The bottom is usuall tempered and if not pre-drilled it will shatter. Your best option to either make or buy an overflow box.

you can have the pipe come over the top of the tank or you can drill a hole into the tank. ive been confused about this too so i finally did some you tube searches on diy sumps and stuff. couple good videos that show how to do it either way step by step.
