Sale on XP series canisters
petsmart has Rena Filstar XP canister filters on sale right now.
xp1 for just 62 dollars. xp2 for only 80 dollars. xp3 for 105 dollars. xp4 *gulp* 220 dollars I'm really debating picking up an xp1 for my 29g tank. Would the xp1 be large enough if i got a 55 though? |

Moved to General Retailers forum.
Those are really good prices. I have only had one canister filter and it wasn't a Rena, but I would say that an XP1 wouldn't be large enough for a 55 gallon. You could try it and see, and throw on an HOB if you need more filtration, but I probably would get the XP2 or maybe the XP3 for a 55.

You gotta ignore the gph numbers you see for these filters. Those are the max flow of the pump. The actual in tank filter flow rate is about half. For a xp2 its right around 150gph. I have one on my 29g and its great. They have adjustable flow but its kinda lame imho, I just add sections to the spray bar.

I'd perfer a xp3 on a 55, but the xp2 would do it. I have a 180g that had one xp4 on it and it wasn't enough for me, so I added a second xp4.
For the record, xp2 = 150gph, xp4 = 200gph. The pumps aren't that much different, the filter volume is what changes the most. |

thanks for your help. Looks like I'll be treating myself to an XP2 for Christmas. Hope the 29g likes it

I am running an XP2 on a 28 gallon tank and think it's just right. I would not put an XP1 on it, IMO.
