Ahhhh...I don't get these
So, I get two math problems per week that I can do extra credit for in precalc. My teacher says they are really easy, but I have trouble with them. Anyways, does anyone know where to begin on the first one? You don't have to work it out if you don't want to....I just need to know how to solve such a problem.
http://www.colstate.edu/mathcontest/...LinkID=Current This one is easier. I know the answer, but I haven't figured out the expression/equation I would write to solve it. http://www.colstate.edu/mathcontest/...LinkID=Current Thanks alot if you can help. |

26.565 degrees, so 26.57 rounded to the closest 100th

Determine the tangent of the angle by dividing 6 by 12 = .5. Then get the inverse tangent of .5 by pure genius, or using a scientific calculator =26.565051177078.
Now if you graduate and get rich, you owe me

for the 2nd one i think its the 3 negatives and the 2 highest positives. because 3 negatives makes a negative, times the 2 positives makes it still negative. smallest would be the lowest meaning negative?
or does smallest mean closest to zero? -63 x 4 x 6 x 8 (dont feel like doing it) hrm whatever i got -12096

I would have to guess any of the 4 numbers and 0 being it is supposed to be the SMALLEST product and no product can be smaller than 0. Example, if you are going from sea level down you could be calculating your depth as a negative height and it would be a rather large product. I could be wrong but it makes sense to me. If you go down 12 feet every 30 seconds then you would go down 120 feet in 5 minutes, therefore you could say you are at an altitude of -120 feet.
BTW, -9x-7x4x6x8 = +12096 largest negative I could get was -3,024, -9,-7,-1,6,8 |

True, but only for determining distance where once you pass a certain point you are again gaining distance. I think in everything else -100 is smaller than -99. But I'm at least a week from my last math class so I could be wrong. As far as an equation, I can't think of one to solve it. I think you just have to sit down and grunt it out.

Well it works for distance, for money (compounded interest) and in some instances time but i agree it is most likely not that easy. If it is the smallest actuall number either negative or positive then it is likely using the fractions and not 0 because 0 would only be a place and not an integer.
When do they post the answers, if ever? |

Distance cannot be negative. How do you measure -1 foot?
