An interesting thing happened on the way to sleep...

One of those things happened in front of our house Saturday night that you'd really like to never happen. We were just getting into bed, 12:30 when we hear a very brief cop siren right outside the house. My wife is taking out her contacts and looks out and says there's a cop car with two other cars pulled over outside our house. I get up a minute later and two more patrol cars show up. Not really sure at that point why the cars were pulled over. A fourth police car blocks the other direction and a paddy wagon pulls up. Two teens are taken out of the first car and three are taken out of the second. The window is closed but we could barely make out some of the words and GUN was stated. Two cops search the fancy silver car but bring out nothing. Its been a good ten minutes and I say I'm going to bed. Something else happens, I forget and I'm back up looking out the window. Another cop searches the cars and he finds this backpack. Why the other cops didn't find the backpack I'll never know. He opens the backpack and pulls out a gallon size bag stuffed full of weed. Not sure if there were more in the bag or not. Eventually, I went back to bed and fell asleep.

We live in an isolated subdivision. What I think happened is that our subdivision was being used for drug deals since there's only one street leading into it. You can't get anywhere but to your house as there are no through. Results in less traffic. Anyway, I think a cop either saw the deal going down and called for backup or it was a sting operation because the second and third cars responded too quickly.

Makes for a good tale, but I'd really rather have kept the illusion that our tiny section of the planet was isolated from that type of stuff.

Wow, what a story Tom! Unfortunately, we aren't as "isolated" as we'd like to be. We are often surprised to find out that the "nice" family down the block really aren't the "nice" people we thought they were.

I am surprised that much fanfare would be created over a backpack of "organic leafy plants which are illegal to possess". There may be "other" things involved.

Watch an episode of "COPS" and pay attention to the neighborhoods...it's no longer limited to the "inner-city"

Wow! It's the small town It-Will-Never-Happen-Here thing that normally gets people. But in reality, you never know who anyone is. Think about the BTK killer. Everyone described him as the perfect neighbor. When I go to my parents house (there has not been a murder in over 35 years, just suicide) I never lock my car doors or even think about closing the garage door. But you just never know when someone you thought was good may turn out to be bad. I'm just glad that noone in your family or neighborhood was hurt!

It's certainly going to be a good time at the local police 4th of July party this year.

Wow. That is crazy. I would have never been able to fall back asleep though.
My mom lives in very quiet neighborhood, some older people, some young families.
One day my mom came home from work to find someone had taken a plant hanger from in her yard and bent it all up. Also someone had gone into my dad's boat and took a hand saw and went next door and tried to break into a trailer that was there. A few days passed, and a lady down the street had her car stolen. I am very worried for my parents. The things that are happening are escalating in severity, and I am worried that who ever this is, is going to try and break into a house next.

Oh yeah, I"m not so naive to think that it wasn't going on, but it's nice to think it isn't. I don't think those involved live in our subdivision, but that's a thought not a fact.

You have a good point about more being involved. We did hear a cop mention a 'party down the street' but have no idea what street or even if it was our subdivision. So the cops might have though they were going into a more hostile environment with more people than simply pulling over a couple cars.

I'm from a small town and know it happens there as well, but while it was happening I told my wife that this was why I wanted to move back to a small town and get our son in a less hectic atmosphere. Of course she pointed out that it still happens there as well, which is true.

Sounds like Neighborhood Watch time to me. I have belonged to these groups in my neighborhood, and if nothing else it gets people acquainted with their neighbors and you learn a lot about what goes on around you. Everyone has a list of phone numbers and if you see something going on you can call each other and make sure everything's okay.

Someone probably spotted these kids in the car doing something and called the cops. If criminals think for a minute that the neighborhood is a "nosy" one then they will avoid doing their business there.

Our subdivision tried Neighborhood Watch a couple times. The guy that used to live next door was one of the leaders but he moved out. I'd say that the effort died a couple years before he moved though. Hasn't been a mtg in 3-4 years. I've tried getting to know the neighbors, but they aren't the neighborly type. We know people farther down the subdivision better than the people that live around us. We go for walks every night. Maybe I'll make up a flyer to see if there's any interest and we can deliver them on our walks.

I suspect you are correct about someone calling the cops. The subdivision is a great place to live and there are people that would get involved.
