I say the show with the shark tank...i con't believe they put so many sharks in a small tank...did they expect the sharks would never grow and stay babies forever >.<...they doing all the BIG NO NO's in tank stocking...

It's not an educational show... that's something everyone needs to realize. It's not going to talk about proper this or proper that. It's going to make neat tanks that people enjoy looking at.

It's more for entertainment ... with some education. BTW ... who saw the trivia that Goldfish don't have stomachs.

I'd imagine there was ALOT of editing of ALOT of acclimating and prepping the water we did not see. One of the brothers did mention during the mob tank about getting the temps and pH right. Besides .. the filtration's got to be big $$ ... looks more like pool filtration.

As for tank maintenance ... high end customers like those on the show hire companies to come do that type of stuff. Who know's maybe the part of the brothers business is also tank maintenance? I figure if you build them ... why not also offer to maintain them = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I can almost guarantee no hotel / casino employee's going to gravel vac. Next time you go to your doctors / dentist office and see those elaborate reef tanks ... take a look at the staff and ask yourself ... who'd doing PWC's?

As I watched the show all I could think was-the bloggers at aquarium advice are gonna have fun with this. I know how creative all of you are....but...Like has been previously commented-When did they cycle the tank? I've been looking at an empty cycling tank for 2 weeks- it isn't fun but necessary. The show was entertaining but I hope it doesn't encourage people to get a tank and think it is that easy to dump in the water and go. More education would make the show more real.

When did they cycle the tank? I've been looking at an empty cycling tank for 2 weeks- it isn't fun but necessary. The show was entertaining but I hope it doesn't encourage people to get a tank and think it is that easy to dump in the water and go. More education would make the show more real.

The idea that fishless cycling is a necessity is a misnomer as well, at least in freshwater tanks, I know nothing about SW.

Fish-in cycling can be done safely and easily, just like with fishless cycling, it takes education and understanding of the process.

I hope they show some amano-type aquascaped tanks soon.

It's a lot easier to do fish in cycling in freshwater than in saltwater, because you are basically wasting money using up salt mix because you couldn't wait for fish. Other than that, fish in cycling can be done in saltwater too. It's just too much work, for no reason.

I can agree that its not established as an educational show, but the producers and tv network still choose to ignore the informational value of the show. Even though its to be for show and entertainment, its still sending the wrong messages, I love the show because, as many on here, I understand the principles of this hobby. But to new people to the hobby, just sends the wrong signals

Yeah, it's an alright show. I definitely won't be anticipating the show every week, but if it's on, I'll watch it.

It would be great to design your own huge aquarium.....but how much satifaction are you really going to get out of it when someone is deciding what live stock to put in it? The people that get these aqiarium don't see the complete aquarium until it is set up, live stock and all. I'm almost 100% sure they don't do any upkeep themselves. For myself I get pleasure shopping around for everything I get to set up my aquarium. granted I my not buy high dollar items and buy all supplies at once but I enjoy my aquarims and happy with what I have.

I agree 100%. I love going to my fish store, and literally just walking around to see all the fish and coral and everything. I also like doing everything myself, which is why I didn't buy a complete aquarium setup with fish and rock and all that from craigslist.

I understand the network wants to make money and ratings.
But why not make it both a fun and educational show?

Its a public program. They have a responsiblity to the viewer.
They also pride themselves as being the #1 aquarium designers in the world, as well as owning one of the biggest stores in the country.

As fishkeepers, they need to realize that whilst its fun creating these cool setups, its more important to provide factual information.

Many people will watch this show and become hooked into owning their own aquarium. The same thing occurred when Finding Nemo was a Huge hit.
For this reason, teaching people the correct way to keep an aquarium is ethical for both the consumer and the fish.

I think you're missing the intent of the show. It is not to get people in to aquariums, it's not to do anything other than showcase some amazing looking tanks. There is no responsibility involved in teaching the basics of aquariums. I was amazed that they even took the time to explain the benefits of a qt tank... that was probably boring to many. It's no different than a car show that shows neat builds. They don't cover safe driving, etc etc. They simply build awesome cars and people enjoy looking at them. I also agree think that cycling is an overly dramatic topic around here. If you don't like the show because they don't cover cycling and proper stocking, don't watch it.

If you have a cycled aquarium, you simply don't need to cycle any new aquariums. All you do is transplant some bacteria and boom. I'm sure they do something similar on the show.

Wow, I love people, we're so silly.

It's a television show. Yes, yes it's on a station owned by the Discovery Network, but they aren't responsible to me the viewer (short of what broadcasting law demands) at all. Their only goal is to be sufficiently engaging that I watch their programming and endure the commercials that funds the continued development of said programming. This isn't PBS, or a College broadcast for course credits. It's meant to be entertaining.

I thought the pole dancing not-mermaids were lame and the use of camo material odd, but it apparently was sufficient for the casino in question so who am I to judge? However, I really liked the old milk-car turned aquarium, that was awesome and I thought the QT set up was pretty darn cool as well.

As far as reality televsion goes, it's actually something I'll watch from time to time. As with all things YMMV.

If people are serious about aquariums, then they'll do the leg work or, they'll long for/acquire money to afford someone that makes one of a kind tanks to do their research for them.

I just watched the first episode of the show, and I was impressed! Yes it didn't show the tanks cycled before-hand and it look overstocked but it's a real good show! After watching this, I realize we're all being silly. I mean, how can you expect so much out of a show? They can't cover every single thing on fishkeeping you know. Besides I'm sure they cycled beforehand, so what's the difference? They edit a lot and after looking through a few behind the scenes clips I did see a few mentions of pH, chemicals, toxins and stuff. I'm surprised they even mentioned QTing at all, that was really good of them to do!

I especially liked the car tank. It was really cool! I would definitely want something like that in my room I'll see if I can find any more!

My only complaint is that I think they're only doing saltwater tanks. I hope they do freshwater!

Wow interesting thoughts on the show. I have no thoughts as I have not played it back yet. Saving it for monday when I don't have to work. I caught a tad bit here and there while I fell asleep. I think it's going to be a cool show because of what they "create". They "create" fish tanks. I think it'll give a lot of people ideas (like me lol) who are not so creative. And I did get to see them pick out an aweful lot of BIG fish before I fell asleep.

That alone was worth it, cause a little picture on the internet just doesn't do these babies justice at all.

And yep that was from about the 3 times I could keep my eyes open for a minute or two LOL.
