Aquarium siphon Vacuum ?

Hi. I just got an aquarium vacuum to suck up the stuff in the gravel and to keep my gravel nice and clean. I haven't used it yet, but I read the reviews and many people say it is very strong. I'm worried that the vacuum might suck up my fish. My platies are about two inches. Will they be ok?

I never have any trouble except at feeding time when the fish get careless. Even neons are ok. When taking water from the upper levels of the tank I do find you have to watch the fish more.
