Currently using the API system but this seems somewhat subjective. Anyone use a system that is more definitive and less of a guessing game?

We've been using the API Master Test Kit for the last 7 weeks (Start up thru Cycling) and after every water changes. We seem to be getting what I would consider accurate results. Saw the Nitrite and Nitrate changes during the cycling stage. As per pH test - Our tap water comes out at 7.6 pH but dips down to 6.6 due to the woodscape in our tank. We saw the gradual upswing to 7.4 pH after adding crushed coral in the media bin, and now have been very consistent.

Have you had inconsistencies with API that we should be aware of, what are your thoughts?

Hello Judy...

I eliminate the testing altogether by just removing and replacing most of the tank water every week. Nitrates from dissolved fish waste take several days to build up in the water to the point that fish are affected. By removing most of the old, polluted water every few days, the nitrates never build up and the fish have a steady and safe water chemistry all the time.

The subjectivity with the API Nitrate test kit is with the interpretation of results. Some of the values (40, 80, 160 ppm) are very similar and can be difficult to tell apart. If you keep up with water changes as BBradbury mentioned, the nitrate levels will stay low and be much easier to read.
Being consistent with how you perform the test is important as well. This includes the manner at which you shake the reagents and test tubes and the times for each step.
