Ok, I never claimed to be perfectly normal soo... I found these awesome beetles in my yard today. I believe they are green June beetles but they are late emerging this year. Probably due to the cool spring we had. Anyway, I caught a few and set them up in a temp enclosure. I gave them some smashed grapes which they dug into eagerly. I actually got to witness them breeding so they must be ok with thier temporary home. lol I will probably keep them for a few days just to watch them (they are so neat and huge, about 3/4"), then release them.

Great photos. I am not a bug fan so looking at them through the computer screen is far better than looking at them in my back yard. Although that beetle is kinda cool. I've never seen a firefly in person.

No fireflies in Canada huh? Guess that makes sense. Kinda sad though, I always loved chasing them around in my back yard at night when I was young. Poor canadian kids left out. hah

The first ones are called Japaneese beetles. Very similar to Junebugs, but much prettier IMO.
We never had fireflies in California either. Cicadas were new to me here as well.

Oh no - no fireflies in Canada? I call them lightning bugs too. A few weeks ago, we had a power outage at night and I looked out the window in our backyard and there must have been a million - really! lightning bugs. It was so neat.

Japanese beetles really ate through my marigolds one year. If I see a big group of them again I'll try the grape trick. It may keep them off the marigolds!

Thanks for the comments everyone.
These are green june beetles. They are much to big to be the japanese ones. I've had them eat my roses so I know what they are.

LOL Your right.

Well, I released my little buddies today. They were not as active as I hoped but I did get to watch them eat and breed so that was interesting. They are off to make more little grass root eating grubs. lol
