Can you mix cichlids?

I'm redoing my 80 gallon tank and I'm thinking about putting cichlids in it. I've been doing some research them, I really like the Kenyi cichlids. I'm just not sure if I can mix different types cichlids together or if I can put anything else with them? Any help would be great!

Many years ago I had a 55g tank with an Oscar, a couple jack dempseys, and one or two firemouths. There was some nipping, etc, but nothing outrageous. I think the firemouth was the most aggressive in my scenario. I will bow to others who know much more about this topic. I just wanted to share my experience, whether or not I was doing the right thing. It was ten years ago, and I am just now getting back into the hobby.
