Curious About Origin of Eel Keeping

I'm really curious does anyone know where I can anything about the origins of eel keeping? Since I bought Swift my striped peacock eel I can't get get the question out of my head. How did eels become pets? I tried googling it but found nothing. Much thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
