Bummer, if the transaction completes it has the potential to be bad news for DFS customers if they adopt petco's pricing structure. I suspect it will also effect nexus for sales tax purposes.

The good news is that, at least currently, there are still good alternatives around if things do go south.

Ohh right... yes... a bummer indeed..

Kevin kohen the director of live aquaria said he isn't going anywhere on a thread on reef central so I really doubt that much will change. That man is a fish pro.

Crossing fingers that it doesn't happen.

I wouldn't be worried about this in the slightest. Both the Foster and the Smith are just getting up in age and want to spend time with their kids and their kids' kids I'm sure.

The absorbing of a company like this can be a very good thing, for us, Petco, Dr Foster and Smith, and Liveaquaria. It will bring more product into the market much easier. This has been something I have already been starting to see at my local Petco, they started housing coral for sale. This can easily lead into greater and easier availability of corals to the middle of nowhere people like myself.

Keep in mind, Petco is a business. They are good at it, if we like how or why they do things or not. They will do things in a smart manner. I would easily suspect the normal foster and smith stuff to be absorbed into normal Petco wares. They will keep liveaquaria as it's own entity, because it is specialized and something that Petco doesn't already have.

Overall, I'm excited to see what happens. It'll end up saving me money on shipping costs.

i meant live fish not supplys

Aquabid for live fish not obtainable at your LFS.

For supplies, I use Ken's Fish and Big Al's. Sometimes I'll look at ThatFishPlace, but they always seem to be more expensive.

Pet Solutions has a broad amount of fish with relatively low shipping comparable to liveaquaria for freshwater fish.
The Wet Spot has a lot of different fish as well, probably the broadest selection of freshwater fish with an online catalog.
Other than those two places there are tons of really high quality specialists depending on what specific fish you are looking for.

My local reef forum discussed this a month or so back. We believe as long as Kevin sticks around (and I'm pretty sure he is) it will be fine. I think it will also be good for Petco. Petcos already seem to be getting better. This may make Petco acceptable fish stores. However... We have to consider that will effect the mom and pop local fish stores.

+1
Kevin stated a little bit ago that he will still be in charge of liveaquaria so I see nothing to worry about. Nothing will really change there.
