Differences in driftwood types

Is there any other meaning behind using different species of driftwood other than appearance?

Some sink on their own, some need weights at first, some are more like branches, some are logs, some have more tannins ect.

Malaysian will sink and releases tannin also, some of the local cypress driftwood around here is acutually bolted onto a piece of slate so it sinks.
