DOWN WITH I.M. SPEAK!

I saw a tech show Sunday and they commented on this. I find it kind of annoying when have to sit and stare at a group of 5-6 letters and run through my memory bank of sayings to try to figure out what this person just tried to communicate.

Im not really that annoyed, but I just wanted to know if anyone else felt the same way. i never thought I would say this, Im only 23 but, those darn young wipersnappers, what will they come up with next!

(no offense intended, just jokes)

well lingo, jargon and accronyms have been around for ages. Just about any professional office even has a slew of abbreviations that are used to "Speed up communication" when you're conversing with someone who is assumed to also be familiar with what your talking about.

Consider this forum, (most of these should result in a mouse over hint if you don't already know them) [acronym:f5d482301f="Metal halide light"]MH[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]PH[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Calcium"]CA[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:f5d482301f], HOT, [acronym:f5d482301f="Live sand"]LS[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Live rock"]LR[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Fish only with live rock"]FOWLR[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="Laughing out loud"]LOL[/acronym:f5d482301f], [acronym:f5d482301f="In my opinion"]IMO[/acronym:f5d482301f]... etc. That's just a small sample. We have a page dedicated to list the ones used most often here (thats a link).

The problem comes when worlds cross. If I started talking about HPAA regulations and how it affects a M0-43 plan on an ICF submission you'd probably be confused... the internet brings so many different factions of people together sometimes it's easy to forget we don't all speak the same lingo.

I'd rather just type the words, "local fish store" only takes me half a second to type and I think it communicates better. I wish here at college the professors would be more harsh on papers turned in with that crap because some students use abbreviations for our practice dissertations, which I think is horrible. It sounds so uneducated when people use chat room jargon in the real world.

I think things like [acronym:03aa45a1da="Laughing out loud"]LOL[/acronym:03aa45a1da], [acronym:03aa45a1da="Live rock"]LR[/acronym:03aa45a1da], [acronym:03aa45a1da="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:03aa45a1da], [acronym:03aa45a1da="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:03aa45a1da], [acronym:03aa45a1da="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:03aa45a1da] are ok. Sometimes in school people will say O - M - G or L - O - L (They'll actually say the letters) just to be funny but there not serious. Well actually, last year my friend would say are you "seir" (serious) and thats "ridic" (ridiculous). But we told him it was really stupid and we would beat him up if he didn't stop (it was that annoying). And he stopped like the next day.

The worst think you can do is come on a forum (like this one) and type
"omg!!! sum1 help. i think my fish r dyin. ne one no wat to do??????"

This just shows that you don't have the time to spell out your words and use proper grammar. It only takes like what, a couple extra seconds. If you don't have the time to do that than why should someone take the time to write a helpful response. [acronym:03aa45a1da="Just My Opinion"]JMO[/acronym:03aa45a1da].
