Today at the fish store I heard a girl ask a lady why the moss balls were moving. The lady said "they will rise to the surface and get rid of the air they have and then grab more oxygen before going back down to the bottom." I just shook my head when she tried to talk to me about the flourite I was buying.

I remember a few months ago I was in a chain store and this lady asked an employee what she needed for a new 20g tank that she was about to buy. The employee said nothing about cycling. She almost left with 6 tiger barbs, a yellow lab and a fancy goldfish and no heater or filter, but I caught her before she did. I managed to explain cycling and the different needs of those fish. She returned all of them. I saved her a lot of stress and a lot of fish lives.

While I was on vacation I went to a hotel that had an aquatic science center. They had two saltwater tanks that really bugged me. The first was a 55 gallon tank with a longnose hawk fish and a young chevron tang. The other tank was about 70 gallons with a dozen damsel fish and a wrasse. Both tanks had nasty brown algae. Then I saw a tank with a painted turtle. The fish being used as feeders were neon tetras.

That sounds like an aquatic stupidity center to me!

Most saltwater aquarium displays here are full of fish that people collect. They don't research the fish and some people I know release the fish when they get too big. The Waikiki aquarium is one of the few places that has great setups.
