I have a few LFSs that I really love, and even one of the big box stores (the one ending in O) has some great staff. The only time I really wanted to smack someone there was when they hired someone else as aquatics manager and then lost that employee somehow a couple months later... they should have hired me! Now I'm not looking for a new job, so their loss! When they lost the aquatic specialist their tanks took a nosedive for months and I could barely stand to even look at the fish but they recently got a couple new employees that know their fish so things have gotten better. I haven't gotten any bad advice there either (yet) but then again I'm not usually in there asking questions.

My LFS has just about anything I could want most of the time, nice healthy fish, lots of plants, and some great staff. I've helped some of them troubleshoot stocking issues other customers have come in looking to fix, and the only problematic sales I've obsered have been commin plecs for smaller tanks, although they did suggest a smaller species instead. I go in there sometimes just to chat with some of the employees. The only real problem with the store I've had hasn't been fish related - some of the feeder mice I've picked up there have died before I was able to feed my snakes. So I get those elsewhere now.

Poor choice- happy ending.

When I decided to start my first brackish tank I talked to local if manager and told him I had cycled and was ready to stock. I wanted something peaceful, that would go good with others to be added later.

Thats when he talked me into the two fig 8 puffers I now own.

Needless to say the next few fish I bought from him taught me to start doing my homework. It was sad, and I blame myself as much as him.

The happy ending is that I have had those two in that 29g tank for over two years.
They are now a tad over 2.25". I have acclimated them over time to full saltwater.

I enjoy them very much, and no longer worry that the tank is being wasted as a single species fishbowl. They are part of the family and I am setting up a 55g sw for a community tank.

Upside #2- He just went out of business.
