Goldfish at fairs etc ....

I went shopping today and outside a shop there was a little hook the duck thing so I had a go and won . Then the women told me what the prizes were, one of which was a goldfish. As I know about fish etc ... I said where are they and went round the otherside to have a look and there was one, so I said I would have it.

*BTW I am personally against goldfish at fairs but I thought it would be better of with me so I now have a goldfish lol. Reasons why It was better of with me!

1) They were selling small fish bowls to people who won them (without filter)
2) I know about fish
3) I have a spare 7 gal(US) tank sat here doing nothing that had a mature sponge filter in it

So now I have a goldfish .

I personally hate goldfish at fairs. Everybody wonders why they always die when they get home...theyre kept in little bowls in the sun all day and have little balls thrown at them.

Sounds like what I used to see here 15 or so years ago....public unhappiness (voiced via petitions/letter writing to the fair companies) made these sorts of prizes vanish from my town about 12-14 years ago.

It did...things came to a head when they tried offering baby iguanas as prizes at a booth.

Baby iguanas 8O I thought all the goldfish at fairs went out with the candy cigarette days 8O Though I recently did see an add in the tropical fish hobbyist for betta cocktails.
And petsmart now sells a ten gallon goldfish kit. The box has a bunch of goldfish in a 10 gallon and specifies that the setup is ideal for goldfish! Yikes! And here's their online add for the perfect 1.7 gallon goldfish toilet!

Well, its been a good decade here, but I still hear or baby igs being offered as prizes in various US states.

I hated selling those ten gallon tanks when I worked at Petco. People would get so mad that they couldn't get all of those fish in that 10 gallon.

Also we had these 1 or 2 gallon aquariums for like 40 dollars. They had a cheap filter, and the tank was made of plastic. We opened one up, and the instructions were saying you could put clownfish in the tank. It was also saying you could put several freshwater fish in the tank. We were disgusted , but thankfully no one ever bought one.

Petco's tank prices are crazy. There is one byme and they have 10 gallons for like $30, and that's for the tank by itself. I also saw baby iguanas as prizes at a fair i went to, along with some goldfish.
