I'm a little upset...

I work in Cranbury, NJ in a nice little old blue farmhouse - the original farmhouse from when the land was actually a farm. We have wuite a lot of land, stretching back where it's just mainly tall grass and some trees. Then we have a little strip of woods that divides us from the turnpike. Well, we just found out that withing 3-10 years, new jersey will claim eminent (sp?) domain over our land and use it to expand the turnpike. :bawling:

I am a tad upset about having to leave such a nice working environment, but what I am more upset about are the animals. We have seen deer, squirrels, cats, birds, mice, chipmunks, and I am sure there's many more we haven't seen. There is so little land left in NJ, it upsets me to think what will happen to the animals and the home they have had for so long. There's this chipmunk that lives in a hold under my office window, and has been there for at least the 5 years I have been in that office, if not longer. I have named him Harold....what's going to happen to poor little Harold?? :bawling:

That is horrible. I feel for you and the animals. You could try and start a petition to stop them or get it declared an animal conservation area.

I doubt the animal conservation area thing would work, but I am looking into trying to stop it....

I know how you feel. When I was a kid there were tons of snakes,frogs and chipminks to be found everywhere. Paradise for a little boy. Used to wonder where the heck they all went. None for my kids to see around here anymore. Most of the habitat these creatures live in has been paved over or houses have been built on the land, little or no regard for the wildlife. That's just the way it is. It sucks. Man is at the top of the food chain.

Lori, The Cranbury Historical and Preservation Society put out a report in 2002 lamenting the loss of open space in NJ. (see links below). Perhaps you could contact them for advice. Also, I'm including the link to the Open Space Institute, a non-profit group dedicated to preserving open spaces. Many of the trails where I hike are on land owned by the OSI. They may also be a good place to start.

FWIW, it's going to be a hard sell...unless you can find some endangered or threatened species on the land, all of the critters you listed are pretty common, way too common in some places, and it will be hard to get land saved for them.

Still stinks, though....I'm sorry!
