its too bad that the competition in the gas market seems to be driving the prices up, to compete on who makes the most profits, instead of driving prices down. sadly, I think it'd take government intervention to keep the prices in check and stop their ever increasing bank accounts.
If I didnt work 30 miles from my house, I'd start considering riding my bike. |

It's times like these that I am happy I live 10 feet from my office. I have had to fill up my tank MAYBE 3 times this year.

Heres something to chew on for the great conspiercy theoryiests.
If its american gas compaines driving up gas prices in the US how come the rest of the world is paying as much as we are if not more than we are per liters. The conversion factor is this. To convert from Gallons to Liters, multiply the number of Gallons by 3.7854. Its not teh american gas companies that drive the cost up world wide. Its supply and demand. With China and other developing nations guzzling gas like we did back in the 50's and 60's or even earlier there is no wonder we are globally short on gas/oil. Sure the oil barons of the world are holding back production to some extent but even if they pumped at full capacity the US itself does not have the refining capacity to expand as we have not built new refineries en mass for decades. Why have we not done this? Mostly because in the early 90's and late 80's the oil companies where behing held out of bankrupsy by government moneies. This was back when gas was sub $1/gal. Gas should have been higher then to cover costs but it wasnt.

Our gas price today was 1.145/litre. $4.22/gal if my math is right. I have no idea how much of our gas is actually supplied by the US but I do know a large % of our gas prices are taxes, which the US would have very little impact on. I have to agree with the supply and demand theory, simple good business commerce. If the demand for the product you supply is there, you have the option of charging more for it. If one oil company suddenly dropped prices, others would follow. But why would they? Although we don't like it and we complain, we still use gas and oil everyday.

I have a friend in Europe who says they pay close to $8 a gallon for gas... that was a few months ago. They also have something like a 20% sales tax on everyday items. But they also get those perks like free schooling/college and healthcare. Oh well.
I filled up yesterday for $3.07 a gallon, regular unleaded. When I filled up last week, I paid $2.89 a gallon, and the week before $2.76 a gallon.

It's 2.89 here now. What a ripoff.
I find it very interesting that at the same time Exxon is reporting record profit and handing the CEO a $400 milion retirement package, Exxon has yet to pay A SINGLE CENT to the folks at Prince William Sound whose livelihood was destroyed by the Exxon Valdez spill. That was 17 years ago, and I believe they owe those folks somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 billion, but obviously they'd rather keep it tied up in the "legal" system than own up to any responsibilities. Better to hand out millions of dollars to high priced lawyers instead I guess. Ok, sorry, rant's over.

For us $3.00 a gallon would be a steal! But $8.00 a gallon is insane!

Nobody likes high gas prices, but like FF said, it's supply and demand. The demand for gas is higher in the US even with the high prices. People don't like hearing it, but Americans need to consume less and become aware of how much oil they are using. I'm not talking SUVs here either.
