Interesting Navy Find

This afternoon my family was going through my grandfathers house and I came across a very cool find. It is my grandfathers US Navy training manual from 1940. I am assuming that the names and addresses on the front cover were men that he served with. Inside the book was also his tag. I thought military personnel were given two tags, we only found one. I gave the tag to my father but he gave me the book. My husband is a WWII collector so he appreciates it a little bit more than I do. I took some pics.

I thought this was pretty cool and wanted to share.

Wow that is amazing. Definetly a keeper. How would one preserve something like this?
Had a similar thing with my grandfather when he passed recently. Being a minister of religion he had old bibles dating back to the mid 1700's

I'd be interested to see more of your husbands collection to!!

I'm not sure how one would preserve it. The only thing I could think of would be maybe a glass box of some kind of something similar. My uncle has my grandpa's medals and uniforms. My grandpa does have some stuff from the ships he was on but we haven't made it to that box yet. His basement is FULL of stuff. It's like a blast from the past. He has a coin collection like you wouldn't believe. When he was in the Navy and they would come to port in another country he would collect currency. The coins date back to the late 30's and early 40s.

HC- I didn't see a difference between the US flags. The flags for France and the Netherlands neither one had a difference either. Those were shown on the next page along with the different flags for Churches, Navy ranks (Admiral, Commodore, etc), and other Navy facilities (Quarantine, Red Cross, Militia, etc)

Here is a good page on document and book preservation, Fishy.

That's a great find! My dad was Navy and I always loved going through his old stuff. He was in during the late seventies early eighties, though, so I never found anything THAT old! You may want to consider contacting a museum and seeing if you let them display it, if they will restore it for you... Just a thought

Thanks for the link justrelax! I'll give it to my husband after he gets his nose out of the book. Surprisingly the book is in very good condition. There is a little wear on the first page where the glue was holding it to the cover but that's expected. Besides that, perfect condition. It's like he never cracked it open (not a good sign. ). Those blotches that are in the second and third pic is a really splotchy ink. That's what my grandpa used to write his initials on the page. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me what that was but now I just realized EFL, hmmmmmm wonder what that means. DUH!
