i teach in Apple Valley (for the non-minnesotans ;) that is the town where the minnesota zoo is,) so i take a group of students there every spring. i would spend hours watching the reef and shark tanks if my students would let me! LOL

I am the Operations Director for your local Paramedic Ambulance Service (ALF Ambulance). We also work closely with the zoo and once a year meet out there for a tour and a cool "behind the scenes" tour of the facilities. The reef, shark and dolphin tanks are, of course, my favorite.

Ok, I'm from Ohio and I want to make a trip to Minnesota now. That first picture is amazing!

ok, i know ive been gone from mn awhile, but i thought you were kidding about the zoo. its open in the winter?? i dont remember this. guess i need to make a trip up there soon, so i dont loose all my minnesotaism....

as far as i know it has always been open in the winter... all the outside exibits are Northern animals (bison, Muskox, siberian tigers...) that do not mind the cold :D

It is a great winter escape. A very large portion of the zoo is actually indoors so there is lots to see and do.

 i cant remember... i do remember it bein real nice tho. when i came down here and went to the zoo, they were not so good by comparison. ill def have to take a trip there next time i visit.

hows the como zoo?

I have yet to go to the como zoo. Now that my son is interested in animals I am sure it will be on list soon. I know they have done a lot of improvements over the last couple of years. They just completed a contest to name their new baby giraff.

como is of course smaller, some of it selling points are the gorillas and organutans as well as the new jungle exibit (wich i believe has fresh water stingrays), i have not seen it yet. it has definitely improved since i was a kid (20 years ago :?)

is the como zoo still free? i went there right before i moved to fl, about 9 yrs ago, and it was in horrible condition. just so sad for the animals. i heard that they got some money to try to improve it.

it is free, but they do ask for donations, i'm sure it is hard to keep and feed the animals when the do not charge admission
