The serious aquarists are the ones who are smart about how they spend. You don't have to have a stand, you just have to have something sturdy to hold and support the tank. Maybe what you said was true, howvever, if I'm that serious about something I put into it all of my time, effort, money, whatever it takes. I would not go to the trouble of having a huge tank with or without a stand even, if I was not planning on having it for years. I would do it this way if I was sure I could maintain fish keeping for a long time. In my case, I might be moving in the next several years so I would not have something real elaborate, but something that fits in my house and is easier to transport if I do move.
