Update....
Today was my first day at work with her alone. MISTAKE, lol. I left her inside, and even though she is great when I'm here, she turned my house inside out, lol. She pooped and peed as well, lol. So tonight I had to spend more money and got her a training kennel. This is only til I get my fence up in the back yard, then she can stay out all day. I'll have a 50ft cable run about 6 feet up, and a lead with a roller on it so she can run the whole length of the yard. You can get these at Petco, and they are fairly cheap. Made of aircraft cable, so it's high strength too. Also need to get her a dog house too. Maybe my next bonus check, lol.

Sure you don't want to do a DIY dog house?
I know you would not let this happen, but I had a good friend who came home from work and found his dog hung by her neck, with the lead of the cable run over his backyard fence. She had chased something, jumped the fence, the cable tightened up and she choked herself to an awful, awful death... Make sure you do not set it up like he did, with enough length on the lead that she could get near a fence or possibly over it. Or any obstacle for that matter! She is too pretty to lose!!! |

Good to see an individual support a good cause and give an animal a second chance. I really like Australian Cattle dogs but cringe most of the time I here someone talking about getting one. These dogs end up in rescues and shelters because most don't have the time to deal with them. I had been following this thread and thinking to myself I hope she doens't posess the qualities of my Australian cattle dog.
I would highly advise keeping her busy, be diligent and consistent. I can honestly say that most require more activity than a working person can give. These are working dogs and need constant mental and physical stimulation. Not all are the same and they are adaptable but overall for most not a good dog for a pet unless one has the time to do the long walks, jogs, etc... Those long walks really become a daily activity. Crating can create problems also with these HIGH ENERGY dogs but in the case of my 6 year old female the only option. She is agressive and territorial and must be supervised. I have a small fenced in back yard, ~1/3 acre and doesn't help out much. I have done obedience classes and agility (highly recommend). Look forward to seeing how your experience goes. Mine has been a love/hate relaionship for the past 4 years. Here is my little jekyl and hyde. ![]() |

As for high energy, she definitely is that. But she's also a kisser too, lol. Loves people, and will go into anyones arms and just want to be hugged, lol. And for the walks, she gets one in the morning, then at lunch I come home to let her out for a half hour to 45 minutes before I go back to work for a few more hours, then a nice long walk on the trail when I get home. And on my days off, the real long walks, as in 14 miles or even more, hitting the river for water now and then. She loves the water too.

Sounds like you will have plenty of time to get for Betty which should really limit any potential problems. I want to clarify I was not trying to say you didn't have the time just wanted some to know what they could be getting themselves into. Hard not to want one when reading threads and seeing pictures of these dogs. She appears to have many of the characteristics of the Australian Cattle dog, do you have any ideas what she is mixed with. I wonder if it is Australian Shepard, that is one I come across a lot.

She's Blue Heeler/Australian Shepard. The Shepard really stands out too.

Update...
All I can say is I can guess that she came from a good home and was probably just too much for them to handle. Especially the way she reacts to other dogs as well as fast objects like bikers and joggers. She's a real lover-girl. Loves hugging and kissing. If you are on your knees, she'll come up to you, and instead of jumping on you and scratching with the paws, she wraps her front legs around your waist or chest, and puts her chin on your shoulder like she wants you to hug her and run your hands up and down her head and back. She's awsome. Loves people, and especially kids. Down on the trail, she get's to interact with many things. For the first almost a full week, I've pretty much let her do what she wants, letting her get used to me, the house, the area, and the parks and trail. But now the training begins. It took 4 days, but I finally got her to stop going after my heels when I run. About 95% of the time now she'll run with me, and not go for my heels. But there's an occasional time where she swings around and goes after the heel. But it doesn't hurt, it's just her nature. It's what is bred into her. But it can be controlled. She also knows sit, up, good girl, bad girl, no, stay, come, and her name. She still has a long ways to go on heel. Also, when I take her to the park and say up, she jumps up on the park bench. But if I swing her around, and get some speed, when I say up, she leaps the bench without even touching the bench. And the benches have backs on them, they are not just flat seats. She completely goes over the bench. She's doing very well with this, and today was only her 2nd day of doing Up. Talk about a fast learner, lol. We also get a lot of exercise. Yesterday we ran 2.5 miles, then walked back. We also hit parts of the river beach on the way back, and I ran along the river, and she ran in the river, in a foot of water. Really giving her a good workout. And the funny part, I look much more tired than she does, lol. But anyways, that's an update on her. I think she was from a good home, but was probably just too much energy for them to handle, or just didn't have the time. But now she's got a good home, and I'm really loving the time we spend together. She's a ball of energy, and is only getting better and better every day.

Great to her she is doing well. She will definitely keep you in shape. They are also some very good leapers pic nic tables could be in the future. I mentioned earlier agility training is loved by these guys. We worked on a lot of stuff early on trying to burn energy and keep her thinking. A ladder laid on the ground, trash cans lined up, etc..... Set up boards on the ground and moved them until a couple feet off the ground. Alot of stuff just laying around the house that doesn't take much time to set up. They learn quick, as you mentioned real quick.
My dog still will nip at the heels. She will stop for the longest time but then they will get you when you least expect it just for their amusement. By far the frisbee is the biggest hit with my dog. Fly ball is another option that can help really burn off some energy. |
