About two years ago a friend of mine who is in the military got shipped to Japan and some of the pictures he sends me are amazing but today he sent me a picture of the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium and I am just lost for words. This aquarium is one of the biggest in the world. (the second largest I believe)

Here are some specs on the aquarium
"The aquarium is a part of the Ocean Expo Commemorative National Government Park located in Motobu, Okinawa . The aquarium is made up of four floors, with tanks containing deep sea creatures, sharks, coral and tropical fish.
The aquarium is set on 19,000 m² of land, with a total of 77 tanks containing 10,000 m³ of water. Water for the saltwater exhibits is pumped into the aquarium from a source 350m offshore, 24 hours a day.
The main tank, called the Kuroshio Sea, holds 7,500 cubic metres (1,981,000 USgal) of water and features an acrylic glass panel measuring 8.2 by 22.5 metres (27 by 74 ft) with a thickness of 60 centimetres (24 in), the largest such panel in the world when the aquarium was opened.
Whale sharks and manta rays are kept alongside many other fish species in the main tank.
The firstmanta ray birth at the aquarium was in 2007.
As of July 2010, there have been a total of four manta rays born in the aquarium.
The aquarium holds 80 species of coral. It is one of only a few aquariums that keeps whale sharks in captivity, and is currently trying to breed them."

I am about to email him for more pictures :D

Truly amazing!

If you want something like that more close to home, look at the Georgia Aquarium. Largest in the world if I am correct :)

They have the Ocean Voyagerthat also houses Whale Sharks and Mantas.

It is the largest and an awesome aquarium (saw it a few years back), I can't wait until he sends me more pictures. This place just looks amazing from what I've seen so far.

Wow. That is huge. I had to do a double take. I thought, wait, are those people standing in front of that?

And what are those gigantic fish in that very first picture?

Are you taking about the whale shark? Its huge! Can get over 14 metres (46 ft) long and can weigh at least 30 tonnes (66,000 lb).
I would love to go see this aquarium. I couldn't tell you even half of the species in these pictures :D

I would like to add that I was wrong on it being the second largest. The Dubai Mall Aquarium is the second largest holding 2,640,000 million gallons
And the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium holds 1,981,000 gallons, making it the third largest in the world.
But regardless its still amazing :D

I know this post is a little old but i have seen many tanks in my adventure(military). Currently here in okinawa japan it has been one of the best i ever seen. If you ever get a chance to travel main land and okinawa i would put on the list

My Dad was stationed on Okinawa while in the Air Force and told me stories of this place. It's cool to actually see pictures!
