I think best way is that females have short, rounded dorsal fin while male's is longer and pointed.. of course it's not always correct

I have two flames and dorsal looks the same it is just they do this thing where they swim side by side and vibrate against each other

I've heard that can be breeding behavior, but also can be a show of dominance... maybe both male? not sure, of course

females tend to be wider, rounder too.. and not as colorful. Mind you, I only have one and just going from what I've read.
