Pleah(soft eah, like eh)-cos-toe-mus or plee-cos-toemus is how I say it
 
'Hey good thing you didn't spell it all out, it's bad luck Methylene blue? Meh-thi-line or Meh-thi-lean?'

I learned many latin... sorry.... scientific names from a tropical fish encyclopaedia that broke the words down for pronunciation.

Unfortunately for me as a Brit, the book spelled it out in American English. Therefore you get the tom-art-oh ... tom ay toe scenario.

E.g..... Corydoras paleatus = pally art us or if you are Stateside pally ay tuss

No right or wrong here of course, but the rest of Europe pronounce it as us Brits do in my experience ;D
 
I still don't know how to pronounce Chaeto. I always say "Cheeto" like the cheese chips. ^.^
