Salinity issues

Hey there has anyone ever seen or heard of Salinity being higher in the sump than in the display tank I have a friend who just set up a 100g fish only tank with a 40g sump and about 150lbs of rock if anyone has any ideas please let me know because I don't have an answer for him thank u!!!
