I treat my fish like I do all my animals including the dogs. It is my sole responsibility to provide a good home to any creature I take guardianship of. These creatures should not be considered disposable. For example, I know people who kill one mandarin goby after the other. They mean no more to them than a fly does.

I'm the same way. I think to myself "what if the role was reversed." I guess it's like treat your neighbor how you would like to be treated but with animals lol.

i know a lot of rich people who take amazing care of their animals and even a couple who donate to animal charities. That type of callous remark is beyond ignorant. Yes, there are some "people" who either out of ignorance or blatant cruelty are inhumane to animals but it has more to do with individuality than with income. An individual can either choose to care well for an animal or choose not to. Low income pet owners sometimes sacrifice disposable income to provide for their animals. Others sacrifice the well being of a pet due to finance. Whatever the case, wealth does not equal cruelty.

I didn't mean animal cruelty with dogs are cats. Most people will take great care of their pets. What I ment was is rich people and even poor people see fish differently than dogs or cats. They look at fish as decorations and not pets. Rich people don't care about the cycle process and fish health. They want their tank and they better have fish in there the moment they have it done!! That is what the ATM guys have to work with 9 times out of 10. So at least they try and cycle the tank as fast as they can to make the tank safe as can be.

I do agree about that TV tank, that was bad! Customers have a lot of say in what the "Tanked" guys do. Again we don't see a lot of what goes on behind the
scene's!

For some reason a lot of people don't see fish as pets but only as something to look at. Even the Law don't protect fish from bad owners. You don't see people arrested for not feeding their fish, or keeping them in bad tank conditions. The law provides protection for every other animals even reptiles, but not fish. Because people just don't see fish as pets.

I think we all agree.

Dear owners of ATM,

We love you guys and your work is spectacular. We would ask that you consider reinforcing the message that a tank full of sea life isn't a plastic bouquet of flowers on the table. There are careful considerations as to the stocking and long term care of the creatures that doesn't come across on the show well enough. We know this is entertainment television, but home owners that want to be in this wonderful hobby don't need disappointment. Saltwater has become vastly easier to do than even a decade ago, but we as a hobby are being closely watched as many think the fish and coral we take from the sea needs to stop. Even with breeding and fragging, much of what we house comes from the ocean. Our hobby needs to show responsibility in our care of these delicate creatures and not be seen as just a rich guys decoration for his pad or a corporate sponsors statement.

Thank you,
Greg the reef keeper.

I have to say when they did the feng-shwey(sp.) Reef tank they did talk about all the corals they used being aquaculted and not using ones taken from reefs. On another note I have seen them put in tons of African cichlids in tanks that have like 1.5 ft. footprint, they all looked all bunched up at the bottom BC they had no where to swim, :(. I watch the show but hate the way they stock the tanks.

A few systems are over crowded but most systems like the casino tank were resonably sized.

I think they do some nice work, some of the tanks are gorgues, but then you get tanks like the gum all, which I heard boiled, the tank I have the biggest beef with was the skate board tank! These guys should know not to tap the tank let alone run skate boards over them!

They used tempered acrylic which was much stronger than bullet proof acrylic which 1" inch. I think the skateboard is a 3" or 4"

The only thing I don't agree with in their tanks, is the lack of hiding spaces they have in some tanks. The Gum Ball tank for example had no hiding places for stress fish.

Like I said customers have the final say on what they do. Most people don't see fish as pets but as decoration. I even felt that way when I started my first tank! That is before my fish started knowing me and eating out of my hands. I felt so bad after I stressed them and they got ICK and died. I never thought I could feel for fish. :p Know I am starting a new tank, but with knowledge! Knowledge I didn't have before and it cost not myself but my fish. So understand what the "Tanked" guys have to deal with. Most of the owners will never get their fish to feed out of their hands, or even grow attached to a fish. They just want it for decoration and nothing more.

What I don't agree with is them not educating the owners, but if they did they might not have a business.

The skateboard ramp acrylic was 2 inches thick. The pin ball tank was great since it had live plants.

I hated the skateboard tank. That was truly ridiculous.

No kidding. Just imagine the uproar people would make if they built a dog kennel that had a skateboard ramp on one side! That was a disgraceful idea.

I was a bit nervous when they tested the ramp tank.

You weren't the only one

I do remember they talked about they wanted the ramp to not scare the fish so they added the extra insulation.

The mob tank was a good setup. My only concern was the achiles tang they added.

Why?

Btw that's my dream fish I think...well as far as tang go.

I would let them do build the tank, set up the tank it self, with my supervision, and pick the fish. But thats it. I would supervise the set up to make sure the tank is set up right to have the fish happy & healthy. And I would put the each fish in when I see fit.

As most have said it is a tv show n we dont actually get to see what happens..i recently listened to a radio show where the cast from cajun pawn stars was tellin about their show..which i know its not the same but its reality tv still .. anyway it takes like 3 hrs to film a 3min piece of the show that we actually see.. so im sure there is lots of things just left out .. then i also agree the customer is the one payin so more then likely its their way or no way but u have the right to refuse service to anyone.. and also i have saw a few shows where someone called needin sharks rehomed n tanked took them to suitable homes. Which is better then nothin..plus they have told i think the dentists office once the sharks reach a certain size he would need to call them to rehome for the sharks health..

It's way too staged. Besides, ever since I introduced it to my friend (fish keeper), all my NON fish keeping friends somehow found out about it too and now they watch it and think they know everything about fish and how tanks work

So I ditched the show

Does anyone know any other good fish shows that are less about building tanks and more about the actual fish?
