Thought this was funny - Aquarium Advice

I found this hanging on the bulletin board at work. I thought it was funny (and very true) so I thought I'd share it with you.

Start with a cage containing 5 monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana from a string and place a set of steps under it. Before long, a monkey will start up the steps to get the banana. As soon as he touches the steps, spray all the other monkeys with cold water. Pretty soon, another monkey will attempt to climb the stairs with the same result...all the others are sprayed with cold water. Eventually, when one of the monkeys starts toward the steps, the other monkeys will try to prevent him from getting there.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace him with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and starts to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and another attack, he knows that if he tries to cllimb the steps, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original monkeys and replace him with a new one. The newcomer goes to the steps and is attacked. The previous newcomer participates in the attack with enthusiasm. Replace each of the original monkeys with new one. Every time the newest monkey starts toward the steps, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the steps or why they are attacking the newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the monkeys in the cage have ever been sprayed with the cold water. However, none of them will approach the steps to try for the banana. Why? Because, as far as they know, that's the way it's always been done around here.

And that, my friends, is how company policy is created.
