unzipping a file

any geeks out there that know how to unzip a file. a download this file and it said it was a zip file and cant open it with any program i have

Download and install. This will permit you to open and unzip the compressed file. There is a 30 evaluation period so you dont have to pay.

With windows XP I can just right click on the file and choose extract all...

Yes XP has zip support built in. Supprised the govt didnt cry fowl about that amongst the other things.

Winzip reads multiple formats. Most of which are used by other programs as well. If you break it down, there's not much to a compressed file; just a dictionary followed by the compressed data. I'd imagine that most compression programs are fairly compatible with other ones (unless they do something proprietary to the data like WinRAR does).
