we are fast on our way to a dead planet - once we kill our oceans, we are done for.

this is one of the main reasons i was going to make my own live rock, in all the articles ive read about it; it looks like its not only cost effective, but it saves whats left of our depleting reefs

I haven't been able to look for myself, but according to Fenner & Calfo's new Reef Invertebrates book, they state that most liverock is harvested from storm debris and is not for the most part actually taken off of the reef. Then, there is also the different places that are fueling local economies (namely Fiji) with aquacultured live rock.

Hopefully we can continue to progress in this manner. Unfortunately, there has not been much attention directed to the reefs yet, with the growing popularity of the hobby I hope we can start having a much greater impact. A certain percentage of the Great Barrier Reef is now not allowed to be fished, etc., so maybe we are finally headed in the right direction in time.

It is also very much illegal to take from the reef in FL and much of the caribiean.

FL aquaculture rock is reefsafe in that its rock that was placed in the ocean by man with the intent to be used for man (aka us hobbists). FL aquaculture is highly regulated.

Hoops statement about fiji rock comming from reef rubble is a correct statement that I have researched aswell.
