I'm using a Vivitar 3915 at the moment. I really don't like this camera, it burns through batteries, there is no zoom, stability of the photographer is a necessity and it's bulky. I could go on and on about how I don't like this camera so I highly reccomend something else and hopefully I can get a better one soon so I can get some great pics in the PhotoGallery

Sony DSCV1 5.0 MP...great little camera! Able to change f-stop, focus, has macro, and a couple of other features including nightshots...it's traveled to italy and france with me and I can tell you that the picture quality got me some really nice compliments!

Nikon Coolpix 8700, 8 MP, 8x optical zoom, and has all the manual settings that Jermz was talking about. I think it's a good choice for someone who can't quite afford a digital SLR but wants lots of features still. I've had it for a year and still don't really know how to use it, but I know I would get some really great shots if I did.

Hopefully OK to ask on this thread...

Needing a smaller camera. Tired of carrying it around or clipping to my belt on vacations. Looking for thin and able to fit in my front pocket, with macro, and at least 5.0 megapixel.

Targeted the Cannon Powershot SD400. Height- 2.09", Width- 3.39", depth- .81".

Minimum focus length - 1.2". I presume that's macro.

Good camera? Anyone know? Better option for "compactness"?

I use the Canon Digital Rebel XT. It's a great camera. Photography is another one of my expensive hobbies!

I have a Kodak Easyshare Z740 and I love it. Shoot great photos and videos.

My next camera will be the Nikon D200 - 10 megapix!!!!

I use the Sony F828. It is a pretty decent camera, at least for what I need. At 8 megapixels it takes up a bit of memory. The reason I went with Sony is because I have a Sony point and shoot dig. cam and a Sony miniDV camcorder. This saved me big money in buying extra memery and batteries since I already had them.

I have the SD400, and if you ask me it is the almost perfect everyday camera. The only thing that causes that "almost" is its somewhat poor low-light performance. As long as the flash reaches your subject, you're fine, but otherwise dark objects on non-time-exposure shots turn out unpleasantly noisy.

In every other aspect I positively adore it -- The interface is great, the pictures come out very nice except in the situation mentioned above, it is eminently portable and has pretty good battery life (though I was quick to get me an extra battery and have been glad I did), it uses a standard PTP interface to communicate with devices via USB so no special drivers are necessary and it works well with non-windows operating systems, it has a convenient and fairly standard video-out socket that lets you show pictures and videos taken with it on tvs(with sound), it's video capture is astounding, especially in good light (often you could swear it was taken with a video camera) -- the one thing to note about this is that it stores the movies in straight Motion-JPEG format, so at 640x480 30fps they take up around 2MB/s. I've never run out of space on my 1GB SD card, and I don't have a separate video camera -- I just don't take more than 8 minutes of video at a time. For the most part, you usually don't want to take that much video at a family event or whatever, anyway, or else you'll bore people with too much of the same. You can even edit the videos in camera. I typically compress them into one of the MPEG-4 variants before trying to send them to anyone, and there are free tools available for pretty much whatever OS to do this should you so desire. I also like the SD400 over the 200 and 300 models because it supports USB 2.0, so you don't have to wait forever for your photos/videos to transfer. It takes especially good macro shots. The 3x optical zoom is also nice, as is the orientation sensor which tags your photos automatically as flipped depending on how you're holding the camera. It has various other little toy features that can be fun, as well.

I highly recommend it -- though you should also note that a certain number of people have managed to break the LCD on theirs, and some claim it to be unduly fragile. I've carried mine a lot of places and have never had a problem, and I believe this is most peoples' experience as well.

Good luck making your decision.
