Stephen and I just went up to my school (UNT) to talk to someone about the completly messed spanish situation that is going on. *snarl* (basically they have a bunch of people needing to take the upper level courses but not enough teachers nor class times)

Anyways, they had a 29 gal aquarium filled with the following-

2 fancy goldfish about 3-4in each
1 Pleco that was about 3-4 in
3 or 4 2in tetras
1 dwarf gourami
and abour 4 or 5 other random fish that I couldn't identify.. but all of which looked like they should be schooling fish but there was only one of each.

You would think some one who set that tank up would have some sense.. I mean, the office is for arts and SCIENCE which includes bio majors.. which includes marine biology majors and what have you. BLEH

If I were so mad about the spanish thing I might have said something

As a bio major, I knew nothing of keeping fish and I will bet that the marine bio majors don't have a clue either

I bet it was set up by the "ART" people!! You know, the same that invent the fashion bag with a little beta box in it

LOL, I'm a Bio Major as well (still undgergrad), and I know a good amount about fish, haha. I agree with bioworldmaker though...definitley set up by those "arts" people.

Part of the problem here is that all of us here (at least in this thread) know something about fish, whether we're academically or biologically inclined or not. That makes us a biased sample of biologists. Anyway, Biology is a big field, and especially at the graduate level is extremely specialized. You can easily be a biologist and not know much (or care) about a subject that is indistinguishable- to a non-specialist- from your area of expertise.

That said, a whole department of biologists should be able to find someone who can at least read up on the basics! I think the same applies to artists too, as they have access to many of the same resources that biologists do (e.g. AA), and have studied function as well as form.

You could ask who is in charge of that tank, and point them at AA!

whoa whoa whoa.

I was an art major. some of us did really great pieces incorporating biology and technology into art. Those who really got it were the ones who understood biology.

we're not as ditzy as you think, ya know

We were just goofing around, we didn't really think an art major would show up over here... LOL... Just kidding...

But I just feel baffled when I see people designing aquariums that hang from a string and are about 1-1/2 inch wide, the poor fish can't even turn... LOL... Not to mention the betta purse... (someone posted that a while ago)

I was at a time an art major... I understand your indignation, but even if I were still an art major I would still criticize those "arty" people!

Hey poikilotherm, speaking of bio departments with tanks (not that we were). How is the tank in the office doing? I heard Sandy left--is the tank still being cared for??

hehe i know i know. I always jump at the chance to rally for my fellow art majors. Its not all drawing and basket weaving you know. there's a lot of theory forced down our throats. though i admit to doing a few projects just because 'i thought it'd look cool' :D
