Here's the latest update:

We received our package from Aquariumplants.com and were very pleased with the quality. They didn't have the baby tears left, so they subbed banana plants. The plants look vibrant and healthy. Let's hope we can keep them that way.

Our testing gives us the following parameters:

PH 8
KH 4
GH 5
Ammonia .5 ppm
Nitrite over 3.3 ppm (off the chart!)
Phosphate - .025

Today we dosed with Excel, Nitrogen, Phosphorous & potassium. Let's see how this pans out for a little while.

Part of the DIY Co2 system came, but we still need 2 more packages b4 we have all the components.

So far so good and we are pleased with the results thus far. Already looks like the banana is throwing up a shoot!

Yesterday we did the first PWC - 3 gallons.... Everything still looks good except for the Vals. We noticed the day after we put the plants in that the some of the tips turned brown and they developed these hair-like projections. I did dose with excel a few days ago, but none since I noticed the vals... any ideas? (also the very top of the hornwort seems to be browning)

As for the vals, they don't like Excel too much. Seachem states that if using Excel with plants like anacharis, to only dose every other day. The same probably goes for the vals. Probably wouldn't do a full dose either.

As for the browning on the hornwort, is it algae or just turning a coppery color? In high light, the tops of the hornwort will turn a coppery color, perfectly normal. Low light, it will be deep green. I personally like the coppery color mine is turning. Looks pretty nice.

As for the hair-like projections, sounds like the nitrate to phosphate is not where it should be. Should be between 10:1 and 20:1 ratio. Dose Phosphate to about 1ppm, and keep nitrates around 15ppm.

Thanks for the response. Thankfully I only used the Excel once.

Question is, will they repair or do I need to trim the brown tips?

As for the hornwort - it's a coppery color at the tips...

My tank is still cycling and the nitrates are at 5ppm and the phosphates are about .25/.3 ppm - that gives a 20:1, 17:1 ratio respectively.

Do I want to raise my nitrates with nitrogen and raise the phosphates? Or wait till teh tank has cycled first?

I'd wait til your cycled first. As for the ratio, maybe someone else can chime in, but because your not cycled yet, the ammonia and nitrite are also sources of nitrogen as well. So I'm not sure on how that all plays into the nitrogen-phosphate ratio.

I have my timer on from 7:30am to 9:00pm.

I trim my vals just below the water level and they just keep on a growin.

Same, except I have a bit of a dusk-dawn effect with 2 timers.

So today we tested the water and the nitrites are decreasing, but not yet zero. Our main concern is the vals:

Do we cut the brown tips?
Are the hair-like growths something serious to worry about?
