I was thinking of how unsightly it looks, but I have an acrylic top over the filter and the filter work work properly if I fill it up....a real catch 22 I guess.

Update pics! I completely tore down the tank and added blasting sand as the substrate and took out a lot o snails. I had a heavy bout of green hair algae so we'll see how long I can keep it at bay.
