What is an inexpensive way to light my 5g for good growth of low/med plants?

You can get a 16" incandescent light strip and add a 10w CFL daylight. The long "U" shaped aquarium bulb is better than the spiral type. You should be able to get all this from a big pet store or even Walmart. I have the same tank (5.5 gallon) with a Finnex Fuge LED light. It's a bit more pricy but it looks great. I could post a pic.

How many kelvins on that cfl 10 watt ?

6500K if I remember right. I've used them for ages.
