I went out and got 4 Amazon Swords, a Java Fern, and a Anuibas yesterday from PetSmart.
The Fern and Anubias look like they're doing fine but all the swords look like they're browning on the edges and aren't doing well. I give them about 12 hours of light, but they are buried at the bottom in some sand.

Should I take them out of the sand. The roots worked themselves out, but even the ones I didn't plant in the sand (2) aren't looking very good.

What should I do?

Just prune back the dying leaves. You will have some die off. It's normal when transferring plants to different water. Don't use too much light or you be growing algae, them well be having a diff discussion
