I remember reading that anacharis releases an antibiotic that kills cyanobacteria. I'm wondering - to what extent is this true? I have three tanks with cyano and want to know if I can get rid of it simply by adding some anacharis.
I have anacharis & some bits of cyano in the same tank. I have even seen cyano on an anacharis leaf (though not usually) so I would say it is unlikely unless you need to fill your whole tank up with anacharis or something.
As soon as I started with CO2 supplementation my cyano started to shrink. I stirred up the sediment the other day though so I have a few new colonies I need to pick up. It seems with the CO2 & extra light the algae is outcompeting the cyano (YEAH !!! - oh wait I don't want the algae either right . . .) You can also do the blackout method that is supposed to work really well.
