Best substrate system for planted tank?

Just remembered that the clay balls were very large at about half inch size and I thought too big unless they broke up. But then I was worried on getting a clay cap plants could take root in.

Unfortunately our yard is sand so that is out for a source.

I'm planning on using it for the first time in my tanks, so I'm not the best person to ask, but to my understanding it's a more economic but perfectly good option for an aquarium soil, as long as it's organic.

You can mix clay in with potting soil as an iron source. I use amaco brand red clay from amazon
